April Works in Progress

I have been in the studio again working on some more paintings incorporating figurative imagery.  I have been reading and thinking about travel, nature and adventures.  I think these new paintings reflect that.

This is what’s brewing in my studio:

These are two new paintings.  The one on the left is based on a poem about a spider web called “For Want of a Corner” by a Gresham, OR poet by the name of Tyler C. Pedersen.

To create the web I did a sketch based on the photo of a real web then cut it out with an Exacto.

This is how the painting looks with these first two layers.  There will be more cut paper images as well as hand-painted images that will go on top.

This painting was inspired by my son Calder’s current fascination with dandelions.

I’m not sure where this painting is going yet.

This painting took a new direction when I started thinking about colonization.  I was thinking about a voyage to America from Grenada and people’s origins.

Art Award

In addition to making art I continuously apply for a variety of art opportunities throughout the year.  Some of these include grants and residencies.  Well, I am please to announce that I have just been accepted to not just one, but two residencies.  The first is to Weir Farm Art Center in Connecticut.  I will be spending two weeks there during the beginning of September of this year.

The second residency is to Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska.  I wasn’t able to accept this residency due to the dates they had to offer me but, am waiting to find out if they will put me on the waiting list for their next session.  I am very excited to be recognized by these two great art centers and to be given the opportunity to be part of their residency history.
